Date: 2026-01-09 06:55 pm (UTC)more than near-death experience, he did in fact die! however he was shortly resurrected afterwards by the dead god of necromancy (thus becoming undead). it was from an acid dragon attacking the party before flying away, knocking everyone out and Velaris being the only death. its okay, he woke up first so no one knew for awhile that he had actually died! though the stark change in his hair color was noticed (natural black + purple curse mark -> white)
fun fact, originally his hair was going to become more and more purple every time he casted a necromancy spell (and failed a wisdom saving throw) until it was fully so. then it would have started fading to white until that god Velsharoon got a full grasp on him, becoming undead that way!
so if he hadnt died... thats what would have happened lol. tho i was pretty good at the wisdom saving throw rolls somehow, i only failed it twice. which was in a row, hence the purple going from just the end of part of his hair all the way to the root.

as for how Velaris felt... at first, he was even more closed away from everyone else, an initial trauma response to Literally Dying. and being afraid theyd learn about his (forced) dealings with Velsharoon. after the party did learn what was up tho, they helped him learn to trust them more. thus he resolved to betray Velsharoon somehow and reach his goals his own way!
that being said, while it sucked ass at first, it did ultimately change him for the better over time. especially after he was fully brought back to life by powerful magic! he went from relying on malicious forces for his goals to breaking free and deciding his own path in life (:
